The Thermal Efficiency Test System (Model WH-TE-Series) is a dedicated measurement system for determining the thermal efficiency and heat input of gas-fired boilers, water heaters and cooking appliances. It combines a gas meter, water flow measurement, temperature sensors and a flue-gas analyser with software that calculates heat input and useful heat output from synchronised measurements, giving an efficiency figure aligned to EN 297, EN 625 and EN 15502. It is used for certification type testing, production verification and R&D, and as an add-on measurement module for a combi boiler test rig.
How Thermal Efficiency Is Measured
Thermal efficiency is the ratio of useful heat output to the heat input from the gas. The system measures the gas flow (and therefore heat input using the gas calorific value) and the heat transferred to the water (using water flow and the temperature rise), then calculates efficiency from the two. On a standardised test the measurements are taken at steady state, and the calculation follows the method defined in the applicable standard so the result is repeatable and traceable.
Measurement Modules
- Gas meter / heat input — gas consumption with temperature and pressure correction to determine heat input.
- Water flow & temperature — flow rate and inlet/outlet temperatures to determine useful heat output.
- Flue-gas analyser — O₂, CO and CO₂ to assess combustion quality and excess air.
- Efficiency software — synchronised acquisition, automatic efficiency calculation and exportable reports.
Efficiency Test Methods by Appliance
| Appliance | Standard reference | Efficiency basis |
|---|
| Gas-fired / combi boiler | EN 297 / EN 15502 | Useful heat output vs. heat input at rated and part load |
| Gas instantaneous water heater | EN 26 / EN 625 | Heat delivered to water vs. heat input |
| Wall-hung boiler | EN 15502 / GB 25034 | Steady-state and part-load efficiency |
| Cooking appliance | EN 30 | Heat input and gas-consumption checks |
Standalone or Integrated
The system can be delivered as a standalone efficiency bench or integrated into a wall-hung boiler test bench or a laboratory type-test rig, where the efficiency result is logged alongside combustion and safety data. For water heater lines it pairs with the gas water heater test bench.
