Short answer: They cover different products. EN 26 specifies construction, safety, efficiency and test methods for gas-fired instantaneous water heaters producing sanitary hot water. EN 30 specifies safety and performance for domestic cooking appliances burning gas — cookers, hobs, ovens and grills. Identify what your appliance does, then apply the matching standard (and use both only if you manufacture both product families).

The Common Confusion

Because both standards begin “domestic/appliances burning gas” and both deal with combustion, manufacturers new to CE certification sometimes assume EN 26 is the “oven” part of EN 30. It is not. EN 26 is a water-heater standard; gas ovens and grills are handled inside the EN 30 family (forced-convection ovens and grills appear in EN 30-1-2). Applying the wrong standard sends a type-application to the wrong technical file and delays certification.

How to Identify Which One Applies

  1. What is the appliance’s output? Heated water delivered to a tap or shower → EN 26. Heat applied to cookware or food in a cavity → EN 30.
  2. Does it have an oven cavity or grill compartment? Those are cooking functions and stay within EN 30 (forced-convection ovens/grills in EN 30-1-2), not EN 26.
  3. Check the flue/installation type: EN 26 classifies water heaters by their flue and air-supply arrangement (the A/B type designations); cookers are classified by gas category.
  4. Read the scope clause of the current edition against your exact model before building the technical file.

If you make a combi appliance that provides both hot water and heating, it is generally a boiler product handled by the boiler standards (e.g. the EN 15502 family), not by EN 26 or EN 30. Confirm the route with your test laboratory.

Reading EN 26 Installation Types (A, B and C)

Gas appliances are grouped by the way they draw combustion air and discharge combustion products. Understanding this grouping explains why EN 26 lists designations such as B11, B11BS, B12 and B13 while a cooker standard does not:

Base typeAir and flue arrangementPractical meaning
Type AFlueless — draws room air and discharges products into the roomStrict room ventilation and size limits apply
Type BOpen flue — draws room air and discharges products through a flueCorrect flue and draught performance are tested
Type CRoom-sealed — air intake and flue discharge both ducted outside, sealed from the roomAppliance is independent of room air

In EN 26 a designation combines the base type with numbers and letters describing the draught arrangement and fitted safety devices — for example a draught diverter and a specific flame-supervision arrangement. The exact meaning of each suffix is defined in the standard’s classification and definitions clauses, so the designation on your rating plate must match the configuration actually tested. Because test pressures, combustion sampling points and installation instructions differ by type, selecting the correct installation type before building the bench avoids repeating the combustion and flue tests. It also keeps the technical file and the rating plate fully consistent.

How the Tests Differ

Test areaEN 26 water heaterEN 30 cooker
Gas tightnessLeakage of water-heater gas circuit and connectionsLeakage of cooker gas circuit, taps and connections
Heat inputRated input against gas category, with water flowingInput per burner/hob against gas category
CombustionCO in products across flue/installation typesCO, flame stability, sooting across pressures
Flame failureCut-off time on main burner and, where fitted, pilotCut-off time per burner
Hydraulic / functionalWater flow, temperature rise, hot-water delivery and stabilityNot applicable (no potable-water circuit)
Cooking-specificNot applicableSurface temperature rises, pan supports, spillage, oven/grill performance
EfficiencyRational use of energy for water heatingHob/burner and oven efficiency (EN 30-2-1)

The decisive difference is the working medium: EN 26 testing is built around controlled water flow and temperature rise (flow rate, outlet temperature, hot-water stability), while EN 30 testing is built around burners, cookware and oven cavities (flame behaviour, surface temperatures and cooking functions).

Wanhe uses 0.5-class instruments, supports LPG and natural gas, and builds both laboratory benches for type testing and automated end-of-line stations for production, with serial-numbered reports for the technical file.

Mistakes to Avoid

  • Citing EN 26 for an oven or grill — ovens belong to the EN 30 family;
  • Citing EN 30 for a tankless water heater — water heaters need the hydraulic test routine of EN 26;
  • Treating a combi boiler as a water heater — space-heating plus hot water puts it in the boiler standards;
  • Testing without controlled water flow for EN 26 — a gas-only check cannot prove hot-water performance;
  • Ignoring the correct flue/installation type when preparing an EN 26 type application.
